Magdalena Consort - director: Peter Harvey

:: programmes

Underlying the group's creation is the desire to experiment with performing numbers. In relation to the vocal works of J.S Bach, this will often mean performance by one voice to a part - but with multiple strings, though larger forces are by no means ruled out where circumstances make it appropriate. Please see the "approach" page on performance practice for more discussion of this.

True to the commitment to J.S. Bach, the Magdalena Consort is able to offer major works by J.S. Bach, including:

St. Matthew Passion
St. John Passion
B minor Mass
Christmas Oratorio
Magnificat

Additionally, Peter's extensive knowledge of the Cantatas and Lutheran Masses enables the creation of varied programmes consisting of these shorter, but equally inspired masterpieces. These programmes can involve smaller performing numbers, particularly in the case of Bach's earliest cantatas, which work well with smaller instrumental forces. This has an effect on the budget, of course. Here are two example programmes:

J.S. Bach: Leipzig cantatas: "Grant us Peace"
(nineteen performers)

Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats - BWV 42
Violin concerto in A minor
Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn - BWV23 (C minor version)
* * * * *
Mass in G major

J.S. Bach: Weimar cantatas
(eleven performers)

Nach dir Herr verlanget mich - BWV 150
O heilges Geist- und Wasserbad - BWV 165
* * * * *
Aus der Tiefen - BWV 131
