New recording in preparation

Later this year, the Magdalena Consort will be undertaking a project of major importance - to record a CD of what is widely acknowledged to be some of the finest repertoire in all English sacred music: the consort verse anthems of Orlando Gibbons. They will be recorded for the first time in their entirety, accompanied by the world-renowned viol consort Fretwork with the early brass ensemble His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts.

Two concerts in the Lndon area are planned in the run-up to the recording sessions, with the recording itself (which is not public, of course) taking place in November:

  • Concert at the Early Music Instruments Exhibition, Blackheath, November 10 2016
  • Concert in the International Viols Festival, Royal College of Music, November 15 2016
  • Recording, St George's Chesterton, Cambridge, November 17-19 2016

  • See the Gibbons recording page for more general information.

We are actively fund-raising, and all help will be most gratefully received. Please see the supporting us page for details of how you can help.

    Stour Music

The Magdalena Consort and Fretwork appeared again at the Stour Music festival in June this year, performing a selection of the Gibbons music to be recorded in November, along with other consort anthems and In nomines by William Byrd and Thomas Tomkins. The concert demonstrated the beauty and expressive power of this music, and will spur us on towards the recording. See Stour Music website for more details.
